Gates backs pause in Iraq pullout

Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, appeared to change tack over Iraq on Monday by suggesting that Washington should pause its troop drawdown from Iraq after the “surge” winds down this summer.

“I think that the notion of a brief period of consolidation and evaluation probably does make sense,” Mr Gates said during a surprise visit to Baghdad.
