If history is any guide, current efforts to punish bankers for their role in sparking the financial crisis could wind up paying off handsomely for those bank employees whose jobs and institutions survive.

Angry that complex financial products have backfired on the wider economy, regulators and shareholders have latched onto the idea of tying City and Wall Street bonuses more closely to their banks’ long-term results.
