Foreign exchange has few rivals as an asset class. It boasts deep liquidity and a low correlation with traditional assets, and enables portfolio efficiency through long-term diversification.

During the market ruptures of 2007 and 2008, global trading volumes in FX rose 15 per cent, lifted by exaggerated swings in volatility and big inflows from investors seeking liquidity where there was none in credit.
