Japan agrees trade pact with Asean

Japan on Wednesday became the first Asian nation to conclude negotiations with south-east Asia on a comprehensive trade pact, ahead of five other countries in the region expected to sign similar deals.

The Association of South-East Asian Nations has been seeking bilateral trade agreements with Japan, China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand with the ultimate goal of creating an Asian trade zone that would include 3bn people with an annual economic production of $9,000bn.
