Hedge fund manager Man Group jumped ahead on Friday as the FTSE 100 drifted lower. It rose 6.4 per cent to 282¾p, its highest level since January, on its heaviest daily volume for three months.

Some traders pinned the advance on talk that Man was set to sell its residual shareholding in MF Global, the brokerage it spun off two years ago.
