Tony Blair's campaign for the UK general election was on Wednesday night dealt a blow with the publication of legal advice by his chief law officer which indicated that the invasion of Iraq could be judged to have been illegal.

The hitherto-confidential advice given to the prime minister by Lord Goldsmith, the attorney-general, was leaked to a TV news show and a newspaper.
