ECB holds interest rates at 2 per cent

The European Central Bank held its main refinancing rate at 2 per cent for the 20th straight month on Thursday.

The move was widely expected given the dovish comments of the ECB in the wake of January’s monthly meeting. Talk of a rate hike, first aired in December, was notable by its absence in January, with Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the ECB, saying a slide in oil prices had reduced inflation risks.
