Rafsanjani seeks to heal Iran’s deep rifts

Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, Iran’s influential former president, called for national unity on Tuesday as part of his drive to build bridges between the regime and the opposition.

The role of Mr Rafsanjani, a pragmatic conservative and political heavyweight with strong links to the conservative clergy and business community as well as the opposition, is crucial in the search for a compromise.
