Belgium in Fortis talks with BNP

The Belgian government was last night locked in talks with BNP Paribas, the French bank, as it sought to find a buyer for the remaining Belgian and Luxembourg assets of Fortis after the shock nationalisation by the Netherlands of its part of the troubled banking and insurance group.

The government confirmed that BNP had shown interest in Fortis and said it was in talks with a number of parties.
