Physics research in good health

Physics research in Britain is in a generally healthy state, despite controversial cuts last year in some particle physics and astronomy projects, according to a government-sponsored review published yesterday. Bill Wakeham, the vice-chancellor of Southampton University, who chaired the review, said: "UK physics is strong but faces important challenges."

The Institute of Physics welcomed technical changes in the research funding mechanism suggested by the review.
