Even before the latest financial turmoil hit private sector pension schemes, the growing gap between public and private sector pensions had been a source of mounting controversy.

Some politicians and many pension experts have argued for years that public sector pensions look unsustainable given their rising costs and the growing discrepancy in generosity between the public and private schemes.
