Surprise rate rise boosts sterling

Sterling powered to a six-and-a-half year high on Thursday after a surprise interest rate rise from the Bank of England.

The central bank raised UK interest rates by 25 basis points to 5.25 per cent. The decision caught the market off guard, with most analysts expecting the BoE to delay the decision until its February meeting.
