Five touted as Blair presidency bid fades

The race to be the European Union’s first full-time president remained wide open late on Friday after a summit at which the leaders of France, Germany and several other nations indicated they were unlikely to support Tony Blair, Britain’s former premier.

“The names of the first wave are not necessarily the winners of the last wave,” President Nicolas Sarkozy of France told reporters after two days of talks in Brussels.
