China has surprised the US over the expansion of its strategic nuclear forces, the Pentagon said on Tuesday in its annual report to Congress on the Chinese military.

The China military power report - which repeated calls for Beijing to increase transparency about its defence spending - said US analysts had been surprised at the ?pace and scope? of China?s [nuclear] strategic forces modernisation.
