Saddam verdict exacerbates Sunni-Shia split

The sentence of death passed on Sunday upon deposed President Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity has prompted impassioned reactions from both supporters and victims of his regime.

However, it is unlikely to make much impact on an increasingly sectarian civil conflict in Iraq, which has its origins in policies adopted by the old regime but which is fed by more recent grievances.
