Philippines halves first-half budget deficit

The Philippines halved its budget deficit in the first six months of this year to the lowest level in eight years as new taxes swelled state coffers while the government cut spending.

Margarito Teves, the finance secretary, said Manila was well positioned to achieve a balanced budget by the end of 2008. However, he also warned the spending shortfall, nearly 44bn pesos below target for the first half, could put economic growth at risk.
