Dutch launch stop-gap measures to avoid crisis

The Dutch parliament on Thursday swiftly set out to try to bridge the gulf between politics and the people, evident in the resounding rejection of the European Union constitutional treaty on Wednesday, by urging a raft of new referendums on a range of issues of public concern.

The 150-seat lower house of parliament, 85 per cent of whose members had backed the treaty, met in emergency session to debate the lessons from the massive No vote.
