General Motors yesterday gave assurances over the future of two of the four German Opel plants, as the carmaker paid back a government bridge loan on time.
After meeting regional politicians, Nick Reilly, interim head of GM's European Opel and Vauxhall operations, pledged that GM would maintain the Bochum plant and the Kaiserslautern transmission plant. Mr Reilly will meet the heads of Opel's European works council today, where he is expected to urge them to shoulder cost savings that GM says it needs to make the carmaker competitive.
