Rumsfeld to stay in charge of defence

The White House quashed speculation about the future of Donald Rumsfeld yesterday, saying the defence secretary would remain in President George W. Bush's second-term cabinet.

Mr Rumsfeld - who at 72 has served as both the youngest and oldest defence secretary in US history - has been one of the highest-profile members of the Bush cabinet along with Colin Powell, who resigned as secretary of state last month.
