Ecuador threatened on Monday to expel Petrobras, the Brazilian state oil company, for breaking the terms of its operating contract.

The warning comes a year after Quito kicked out Occidental, the US oil company that was the biggest foreign investor in the country, on similar charges. The government seized $1bn of the company’s assets, prompting Occidental to file a claim against Ecuador at the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.
