The 700m bridge that towers 15 metres above the murky Panj River marks the Afghan-Tajik border. It was the pride of the US military which built it to the highest possible international standards amid much fanfare about the effort to knit together the economies of two troubled countries and giving central Asian businesses access to south Asian markets.
