Leaders share a loss of voter confidence

A recently published history of Franco-British relations described the two countries as “non-identical twins”, given their similarities in terms of population, economic weight and standing in the world. The same description could perhaps be applied to the countries’ political leaders.

Although they have wildly different temperaments, Nicolas Sarkozy and Gordon Brown share the same predicament: they are struggling to assert themselves in the face of increasingly sceptical public opinion.
