Attack on ‘fat cats’ could backfire

By going after private equity in Tuesday’s pre-Budget report, Alistair Darling was hoping to play to the masses with popular tax rises aimed at “fat cats” in the City.

But tax experts said the chancellor seemed to hit the masses hardest, while private equity titans breathed a sigh of relief that the changes were not more severe.
