The first two days of Olympic competition have inevitably produced their share of surprises. But the greatest shock of all has perhaps been the last thing anyone expects in China: an absence of people.

After the catharsis of the opening ceremony, the Olympic family – as its patriarchs like to call it – always splinters into fragments as the competitors concentrate on their own business, much of which is rather obscure.
