Financial services skills body faces closure

An agency responsible for improving skills in the country’s woebegone financial services sector has been threatened with closure because Whitehall thinks it is not up to scratch.

John Denham, the skills secretary, is set to announce on Monday that the Financial Services Skills Council, a City-based body set up by the government to help one of the key sectors of the UK economy, will have its bid for a new operating licence turned down.
