SIVs - the long and the short

Structured investment vehicles and bank-sponsored conduits are both designed to exploit the difference between the low-cost of short-term funding and the higher returns of longer terms loans and investments, writes Paul J Davies.

They are essentially formulaic and restricted versions of a bank itself.
