Few understand better than Jean-Claude Trichet, European Central Bank president, the scale and complexity of the global economic crisis. He chooses a simple metaphor, however, to explain why everything went so wrong in the financial system. It was “as if we had been keen on eliminating a number of airbags from the car”. Yet “now that we have an accident, we are surprised to see that we have a lot of scars”.
