Cases of swine flu almost double in a week

The number of new cases of swine flu in England almost doubled to 9,000 over the past week, confirming the pattern of an intensifying second pandemic wave of infection taking place across the country.

The figures, though still at low levels, show that “the disease is starting to rise”, Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer, said. It mirrors an increase in France, the US and several other countries.
