The workplace was once synonymous with formality. Then, in the dying years of the 20th century, informality swept into fashion.

Dotcom businesses were marked by their lack of hierarchy and the casual clothes worn by the paper millionaires who worked for them. The adventurous mood spread, leading to tie-less meetings, open doors and dress-down Fridays.
