Conservatives seek leader after Howard resignation

Michael Howard on Friday triggered a battle for the heart and soul of the Conservative party after becoming the fourth Tory leader to quit in eight years.

Tory MPs reacted with dismay to Mr Howard's unexpected announcement, predicting a protracted period of in-fighting as the party hunted for a new leader. They had hoped he would stay on to create a period of stability and allow the Conservatives to build on the recovery they began on Thursday night.
