US equities fell on Wednesday as a late sell-off in the financial sector erased gains made during a choppy trading day on Wall Street as investors digested another busy day of earnings.

Morgan Stanley fell after bad debts and real estate writedowns wiped out trading gains during the first quarter. The stock lost 9 per cent to $22.44.
