US airlines stung by jet fuel hedges

Three of the US’s biggest airlines have reported wider quarterly losses after a sharp drop in jet fuel prices forced the carriers to mark down the value of their hedges bought before the economic downturn.

Continental Airlines, US Airways and JetBlue Airways joined their bigger peers in recognising the costs of locking in fuel prices at higher levels.
