Raúl Castro named new Cuban president

The Cuban national assembly elected Raúl Castro president of the council of state and José Ramón Ventura first vice-president on Sunday, in a historic vote for Cuba and the Americas.

The decision ended Fidel Castro’s decades-long rule and, for the first time since the 1959 revolution, placed someone other than the Castro brothers in the line of succession.
