In the northern Zambian copper mining town of Chingola – which, like much of the continent, depends on commodities and subsistence farming for its survival – the ascent of a black man to the White House for the present overshadowed fears of economic pain ahead.
”I woke up and switched on and I was shocked. I just could not believe that the Americans would vote for an African-American,” said Sydney Kalaba, 25, who works at the local branch of Barclays bank. ”This is like a great door that has been opened to Africa.”
