Brussels fears growing French euroscepticism

Tensions between Paris and Brussels intensified yesterday as José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, warned French politicians they were fuelling euroscepticism ahead of May's referendum on the European Union constitution.

Mr Barroso said he was "amazed" at the tone of the European debate, while Günter Verheugen, EU enterprise commissioner, urged calm in the debate and said the atmosphere in France had become "poisoned".
