Pity the chief executive who sees his company’s shares grow steadily over several years to peep three times over £11.00 last year, only to begin a steep decline a matter of days before a trading statement to die for.

Such a man is Bill Whiteley, head of Rotork, who will retire in May after 33 years with the specialist engineering company.
