The clever calculation to circumvent Ireland’s rejection of the Lisbon treaty is to get all other countries to approve it. The Irish will then be told to rethink, with a veiled threat to take it or leave it. The trick might work – it has in the past – but it is almost irrelevant. The sad truth is that the European Union is in deep trouble, for good reasons.
