Commissioner supports legal action against Italy

Charlie McCreevy, the European Union internal market commissioner, on Tuesday said he favoured legal action against Italy over the way the country’s central bank handled two bank takeovers this year.

A legal challenge by the European Commission would mark a surprise escalation in its struggle with Antonio Fazio, the governor of the Bank of Italy, over his alleged protectionist policies.
