UK retailers fail to curb conflict gems

Diamond retailers in the UK are failing to play their part in the battle against conflict diamonds and risk undermining the United Nations-backed initiative to clean up the industry, according to a report to be released on Tuesday.

The report is the product of a survey of 42 of the most prominent UK jewellery retailers by Amnesty International and Global Witness, the campaigning group that first alerted the world to the issue of conflict diamonds in the 1990s.
