Karzai vows to beat corruption

President Hamid Karzai pledged on Tuesday to fight corruption and reach out to his Taliban opponents as he faced heavy US pressure to deliver better government after winning Afghanistan’s disputed election.

Western powers and Afghans fear that the legacy of the tainted poll will undermine Mr Karzai’s ability to turn round an administration plagued by a combination of graft and cronyism that has fuelled the growing insurgency.
