House of Fraser defies gloom

House of Fraser’s solid half-year results have increased hopes that an improving performance could provide the launchpad for department store consolidation.

People familiar with Baugur, the Icelandic investment group that is HoF’s lead shareholder, said the company and its partners had recently renewed their interest in acquiring Debenhams, the UK department store chain, and Saks, its US peer.
