The housing market is picking up speed into the busy spring season, a trend that will not be lost on the Bank of England as it considers the future course of interest rates.

A report from Halifax showed house prices rose by 2 per cent in April compared to the previous month and are 8 per cent higher than for the same time last year. The average price of a home is now £178,992.
