William Ackman, the activist investor, may be heading for a renewed tussle with Eddie Lampert, the hedge fund investor who is chairman and principle investor in Sears Holdings, the third-largest US retailer.

Mr Ackman announced this week he had acquired about 5m shares in Sears, or roughly 3 per cent of total shares outstanding at the end of August.
