At the age of 83, Pierre Boulez seems to have found a new musical enthusiasm. Having recently performed Janácek's From the House of the Dead , which he says is his final opera production, he came to the BBC Proms this year for a concert devoted wholly to the music of Janácek.
There is something fitting about a conductor discovering Janácek in his Indian summer. The composer was himself a notorious late starter, already 50 when he had his first success with Jenufa and reaching his great last operas two decades later, but his inspiration explodes with a vitality that is anything but an old man's music.
