France and Germany set to clash over free market

France and Germany are heading for a rare clash next week as Berlin prepares to back the European Commission in its battle against mounting protectionism.

German officials said Michael Glos, economics minister, would condemn the “protectionist drift” of some European Union members at a meeting of Commission members and economics, industry and research ministers from the 25-nation bloc in Brussels on Monday.
