Markets tumble amid fears over banks

The growing realisation that there is no quick fix to the ailing global financial system – and that some of the world’s biggest banks might have to be taken over by the US government – pushed stock markets round the world this week to their lowest levels in years.

The weak financial system threatens to tighten the credit crunch and plunge economies into even deeper recessions.
