Cod off NAmerica 'has fallen by 96%'

All the adult cod now in the seas of the Scotian Shelf off the coast of North America could fit into 16 small 19th-century schooners.

The first scientific estimate of original stocks there before the fishing industry took off in the 1850s will be published today in Frontiers in Ecology. The study found stocks had declined by 96 per cent.
