A brutal crackdown by the military regime has curtailed protests after tens of thousands of monks and their supporters held days of marches for democracy in Rangoon and other cities in the biggest demonstrations in the country since 1988.

The official death toll, widely seen as an under count, was put at 10, including a Japanese photographer. Troops have arrested hundreds of monks and sealed off key monasteries.
