Senior Russians gathering for the normally self-congratulatory St Petersburg Economic Forum will have at least one reason to slap each other’s backs.

Even as output is expected to shrink 10 per cent this year, Sberbank’s involvement in Opel’s rescue is a low-cost way for Moscow to project the image of a renascent economic power. But it is unclear what the deal brings to Russia.
