Unicredit gains Asian 'hub'

Unicredit, the Italian bank, plans to use its acquisition of Kazakhstan's ATF Bank, completed yesterday for $2.1bn, as a springboard to expand further into central Asia.

Unicredit lands in Kazakhstan at an unsettled time for the banking sector which, after several years of voracious foreign borrowing, has seen liquidity evaporate in the wake of the US subprime mortgage crisis.
